FAQ

Why the need to form this association?

The recent anti-cruise ship efforts are one of several looming threats to the business community and the very important nucleus of Bar Harbor’s heritage.  As our membership grows, we will continue to remain committed to protecting local business owners and their employees’ way of life. There are other conversations underway that should be closely monitored to ensure balanced and common-sense decisions that affect jobs and local small businesses.

Is this just for business?

Not at all. The unbalanced and destructive impacts of canceling cruise ships will ripple through the community. Higher taxes, the loss of jobs, diminished charitable funding, and shorter shoulder seasons will impact everyone.

Is this just about cruise ships?

No, it’s about common sense. There are several items that an association like APPLL should closely monitor and participate in where appropriate. The threat to the lobster industry is very real and could have catastrophic impacts on Bar Harbor fishing families and businesses. A large industrial salmon factory planned for our local waters is looming. Other conversations about impact fees, local option taxes, and visitor reduction strategies could have negative implications for many.

Do I have to be a Bar Harbor business to join?

No. The purpose of APPLL is to provide a platform for anyone to show support for Bar Harbor residents, business owners, and their employees. We welcome support from any person or institution that wants to help.

Is my membership and/or donation tax deductible?

We are a 501-(c) (6) which means any contribution from a business is tax deductible.  Personal contributions are not.

Is a lawsuit the only way?

Unfortunately, the promoters of this anti-cruise ship initiative did not consult the town or offer to work with the Chamber of Commerce on the potential impacts on their friends and neighbors. Thankfully, there are laws in place that protect everyone, and for good reason. The time has come to safeguard the true heritage of Bar Harbor for this generation and future generations.
